Elle s\u2019appuie sur des m\u00e9thodes quantitatives et qualitatives : une soixantaine d\u2019entretiens semi-directifs notamment avec des diplomates japonais, une \u00e9tude d\u2019archives japonaises et onusiennes, et une analyse d\u2019environ 200 discours japonais. Au vu de l\u2019essor du multilat\u00e9ralisme notamment depuis le milieu du 20\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, l\u2019\u00e9volution du r\u00f4le et du pouvoir du Japon, sa constitution renon\u00e7ant \u00e0 la guerre ainsi que sa politique \u00e9trang\u00e8re caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par son alliance avec les Etats-Unis, nous nous interrogeons sur le \u00ab comment \u00bb et le \u00ab pourquoi \u00bb de la coop\u00e9ration japonaise aux Nations unies. Cette th\u00e8se donne trois r\u00e9ponses \u00e0 chacun de ces questionnements. Concernant le \u00ab comment \u00bb, il y a d\u2019abord une \u00e9volution en direction d\u2019un recentrement discursif sur le Japon ; ensuite, ses contributions financi\u00e8res lui permettent de jouer un r\u00f4le international ; et enfin, les diplomates onusiens japonais ont un style diplomatique que nous appelons \u00ab coop\u00e9ratif \u00bb. Concernant le \u00ab pourquoi \u00bb, nous avons identifi\u00e9 trois motivations principales \u2013 outre les contraintes externes \u2013 pour la diplomatie multilat\u00e9rale japonaise : elle est, d\u2019abord, bas\u00e9e sur un certain nombre de principes, ensuite elle est un moyen d\u2019influence et finalement un outil pour obtenir de la reconnaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abstract<\/strong>: This thesis attempts to fill a gap in the contemporary academic literature via a comprehensive study of Japan\u2019s diplomatic engagement with the United Nations. Covering the entire period of Japan\u2019s UN membership from 1956 to 2020, the analysis works at three main levels\u2014namely the central themes of Japan\u2019s UN diplomacy, its financial contributions to the UN, and Japanese diplomatic practice. This is based on mixed methods research, encompassing more than sixty semi-structured interviews (most of them with Japanese diplomats), documentary analysis of Japanese and UN archives, and a discourse analysis of approximately 200 Japanese speeches. Japan\u2019s relationship with the UN must be seen in the context of the general rise of multilateralism since the mid-twentieth century, the evolution of the country\u2019s world role and power, a constitution renouncing war, and a foreign policy characterized by an alliance with the United States. Against this background, the thesis asks how and why Japan cooperates at the UN. The answer to both parts of this question is threefold. The \u2018how\u2019 answer emphasizes an evolution towards a discursive focus on Japan itself, Japanese financial contributions as a means to play an international role, and the \u2018cooperative\u2019 style of Japanese diplomats.
