An Invitation into the World of Eison\u2019s Autobiography: Reading the Kong\u014d busshi Eison kanjin gakush\u014dki with Professor Kenji Matsuo (Yamagata University)<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is Matsuo Kenji, Professor Emeritus of Yamagata University. I was recently asked by some scholars in the United States to lead a reading group focused on primary sources concerning premodern Japanese religions. Seeing that this would be a fruitful endeavor, I have decided to offer a few sessions that will focus on the Kong\u014d busshi Eison kanjin gakush\u014dki<\/em> \u91d1\u525b\u4ecf\u5b50\u53e1\u5c0a\u611f\u8eab\u5b66\u6b63\u8a18 (hereafter, Gakush\u014dki<\/em>). Gakush\u014dki <\/em>is the auto-biography of Eison\u53e1\u5c0a (1201-90), based at Saidaiji in Nara, and includes records regarding his activities from the year 1201 and covering 85 years of his life. Although research on the religious group that Eison founded has largely been neglected, it was a group that had a membership of over 100,000 people, making it one of the largest religious groups in medieval Japan. Due to its vast size, there are many texts and objects associated with this group that are left for us to study today. One could say that Eison\u2019s group holds the key to reveal various aspects of medieval Japanese history, including politics, arts, and literature. For our first reading group session, I will explain the significance of reading Gakush\u014dki<\/em> and provide my own understanding of what makes Eison\u2019s group such a captivating object of study. International workshop, Saich\u014d and Kenkairon<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In commemoration of the 1200th anniversary of Denky\u014d Daishi Saich\u014d\u2019s death, there have been a number of new publications in recent months on Saich\u014d and his writings. This international workshop will revolve around a discussion on the significance of these new publications, with a specific emphasis on Saich\u014d\u2019s Kenkairon<\/em>, a text known for its abundant citation of various Mah\u0101y\u0101na scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
