This event is designed as a space for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to engage deeply with the art, cultural significance, and dynamics of humour in Japan while fostering lively discussion and interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Workshop Details:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date:<\/strong>\u00a020th June 2025 (additional dates may be added based on interest)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Format:<\/strong>\u00a0Presentations, interactive discussions, and comparative dialogues involving practitioners and experts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Language:<\/strong>\u00a0The primary language of the workshop is English, with support available for participants working in Japanese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mode:<\/strong>\u00a0Online \u2013 join us from wherever you are<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Topics and Questions to Explore:<\/strong><br>We welcome papers that approach Japanese humour and comedy from diverse angles, including but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The nuances of comedic performance, particularly in genres such as\u00a0<strong>rakugo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>manzai<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The representation and function of humour in Japanese media, literature, and pop culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The unique characteristics of comedic language and storytelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The social dimensions of humour in everyday settings\u2014how it connects or divides, soothes or provokes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparative perspectives: What can be learned by juxtaposing Japanese comedic forms with those from other cultures?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Presentation Opportunities:<\/strong><br>In addition to traditional 20-minute paper presentations, we invite submissions for work in progress or&nbsp;<strong>\u00ab\u00a0provocation papers\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>\u2014shorter contributions of 5-10 minutes.
