La conf\u00e9rence sera donn\u00e9e en anglais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Julie Nelson Davis (University of Pennsylvania)<\/strong><br><strong>The Shunp\u014dan Incident: Forgery and Ukiyo-e Painting<\/strong><br><strong>Jeudi 9 avril 2026, 17h-18h30<\/strong><br><strong>Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9, 5 rue Thomas Mann, 75013 Paris, B\u00e2timent C, 4e&nbsp;\u00e9tage, salle 479C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cgreatest discovery\u201d cried the headline in the\u00a0<em>Asahi Shinbun<\/em>\u00a0on April 26, 1934: two Sharaku paintings found in the Shunp\u014dan collection. This private collection held seventeen rare ukiyo-e paintings\u2014all masterpieces\u2014and would be going to auction in May. Professor Sasakawa Rinp\u016b verified their quality and the organizers produced a deluxe, full-color catalogue. Rumor had it that these paintings would be brought to the committee on Important Cultural Properties. During the auction preview, more rumors began\u2014that these were not masterpieces, but forgeries. This talk examines the Shunp\u014dan Incident, presents new evidence for the case, and considers the impact on the field ever since.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Profile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie Nelson Davis\u00a0is the Paul F. Miller, Jr. and E. Warren Shafer Miller Professor of History of Art and Chair of the Department of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research engages Japanese prints, illustrated books, and paintings from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. Davis is author of\u00a0<em>Utamaro and the Spectacle of Beauty\u00a0<\/em>(2007, 2021),\u00a0<em>Partners in Print: Artistic Collaboration and the Ukiyo-e Market<\/em>\u00a0(2014),\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Picturing the Floating World: Ukiyo-e in Context\u00a0<\/em>(2021), along with numerous articles and essays. Davis has received fellowships from the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, the Clark Art Institute, and the Guggenheim Foundation, among others.
