Navigating Health, Aging, and Sexual Demands among Chinese Sex Workers in Paris
My dissertation project examines how sex workers reliant on youthful attractiveness navigate the pressures of maintaining health and beauty as they grow older, focusing on middle-aged (forties to sixties) Chinese women migrant sex workers in Paris. Besides sexually transmitted illnesses, older Chinese sex workers also suffer from chronic and terminal illnesses that are related to biological aging. In an industry where youth and beauty are highly valued to “capitalize on sexuality,” aging also exacerbates women’s perceived beauty and attractiveness. Through a range of ethnographic methods, this project seeks to answer how aging and migration impact women sex workers’ health and safety.
