Call for Papers: Online Research and Writing Workshop on Japanese Humour and Comedy

Organised by Dr. Richard Talbot (University of Salford) and Dr. Till Weingärtner (University College Cork)

We are pleased to announce an online research and writing workshop dedicated to exploring the multifaceted world of Japanese humour and comedy. This event is designed as a space for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to engage deeply with the art, cultural significance, and dynamics of humour in Japan while fostering lively discussion and interaction.

Workshop Details:

  • Date: 20th June 2025 (additional dates may be added based on interest)
  • Format: Presentations, interactive discussions, and comparative dialogues involving practitioners and experts
  • Language: The primary language of the workshop is English, with support available for participants working in Japanese
  • Mode: Online – join us from wherever you are

Topics and Questions to Explore:
We welcome papers that approach Japanese humour and comedy from diverse angles, including but not limited to:

  • The nuances of comedic performance, particularly in genres such as rakugo and manzai
  • The representation and function of humour in Japanese media, literature, and pop culture
  • The unique characteristics of comedic language and storytelling
  • The social dimensions of humour in everyday settings—how it connects or divides, soothes or provokes
  • Comparative perspectives: What can be learned by juxtaposing Japanese comedic forms with those from other cultures?

New Presentation Opportunities:
In addition to traditional 20-minute paper presentations, we invite submissions for work in progress or « provocation papers »—shorter contributions of 5-10 minutes. These concise presentations will act as catalysts for longer discussions and provide presenters with an opportunity to develop work-in-progress or initial ideas into fully formed research outputs.

Publication Opportunity:
This workshop is linked to a planned publication project, offering participants the chance to contribute to forthcoming scholarly works.

Submission Details:

For any queries, contact Richard Talbot ( r.talbot@salford.ac.uk ) and Till Weingärtner ( till.weingartner@ucc.ie ).

We look forward to receiving your proposals and welcoming you to an intellectually stimulating event centred on Japanese humour and comedy.
