Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for our Special Issue « Ritual Healing in Early East Asia » in the journal Religions (MDPI).
This Special Issue aims to open new, transregional discussions on healing from antiquity to the early medieval period (up to the 10th century CE) across China, Korea, and Japan. We particularly invite contributions that trace the circulation of medical texts, religious techniques, ritual specialists, materia medica, and therapeutic knowledge across political, linguistic, and religious boundaries.
We welcome original research articles and reviews addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:
Incantations, exorcism, or “magical” aspects of local medical traditions.
Transmission of local healing knowledge throughout early East Asia.
Ritual healing artifacts: texts, material objects, and iconography.
How to submit:
Please send a title and a 200–300 word abstract directly to the Guest Editors (Prof. Constance Cook: cac8@lehigh.edu; Dr. Eléonore Caro: eleonore.caro@ehess.fr), copying the Assistant Editor of Religions, Clare Chai (clare.chai@mdpi.com).
Deadline for abstracts: 30 September 2026
Deadline for full manuscripts: 30 April 2027
